Sankalpa - heartfelt desire

By Hanne

Along with the new year comes resolutions. Promises of how I will be better in the new year from the previous one. How do I finally get myself out of a bad habit that I’ve wanted to let go of or that I know I should let go of? As noble as these resolutions often are, they are rarely permanent. While the goals for the new year are good, the state of mind often is somewhat superficial, and therefore the desire for change is not really coming from the depths of your heart. Sankalpa – Heartfelt desire can be a good alternative for the traditional new year’s resolution.

Sankalpa - heartfelt desire

Sankalpa – heartfelt desire can be used as an option for the new year’s resolution. However, it will take some effort to come up with a good Sankalpa. It is the deepest desire of your life. The word Sankalpa comes from Sanskrit. San means association with the highest truth, and kalpa means promise or vow.

Sankalpa is a promise that will allow you to move towards your deepest desire. Defining it starts with thinking and finding your purpose in life. It is the most essential thing in your life, even more important than the end result. There is a call to action in Sankalpa, which is the driving worse for you. We often ignore the things we are drawn into because changing habits is more effortless. Sankalpa allows us to listen to our inner voice and move in the right direction.

Choosing the Sankalpa

Choose only one goal for your Sankalpa so that you can focus all your energy on just one thing, and all your power is focused on that goal. You will find more detailed instructions at the end of this article.

When choosing a Sankalpa, you should follow and listen to the deepest voice of your heart. Ask yourself what do you want from your life? What is your purpose in your life? What is the thing that brings the most meaning to your life? The intention is what takes you in the right direction to your Sankalpa. It must be precise and concrete. The nature of Sankalpa is something that is easy to check, and you can from time to time check if it is coming true or not.

Once you know where you want Sankalpa to take you, it’s time to put it into words in a sentence that’s easy for you to remember.

Manuscript for Sankalpa

Sankalpa is personal and is good to keep a secret. Understanding and forming it is listening to the voice of the heart. Your desire is within you, and you just have to put it into words.

The sentence you form reminds you of your intention and repeating it will strengthen your heart’s desire. What characterizes Sankalpa is that it is meant to be found from the depths of you, to what you are genuinely behind your ego. A good moment to repeat Sankalpa is in the evening, just before going to bed, or in the morning right after you wake up and repeat and repeat it when you need inspiration and motivation.

The manuscript for forming Sankalpa:
1. Relax in the way most comfortable for you, for example, by meditating or doing a breathing exercise.
2. Ask yourself who you really are and what you ultimately want several times. Write down your thoughts and moods without analyzing them.
3. Once you have written everything, take a break. Take a look at what you write. Form your Sankalpa, a positive, straightforward sentence.
4. Write down the power sentence you created. Repeat it in your mind and let the emotions of the sentence affect your body.
5. Choose an item or do something that reminds you of Sankalpa. Repeat the sentence in your mind for the next few months as often as needed. If you have a decision to make in your life, think about how the decision will affect the fulfillment of your wish.

Sankalpa or New Year's resolution?

Sankalpa differs from the new year’s resolution. Behind the New Year’s resolutions, there is often some “stimulus” coming from outside ourselves; weight loss or skipping alcohol for a month. Rarely, however, do New Year’s resolutions take you toward what you feel is your place in the world.

Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? Are you also going to create Sankalpa to take you forward in the new year?
