New year, new promises, that is how we usually start the beginning of the new year. Promises rarely work, so the pledge’s object remains a permanent habit. Instead of New Year’s resolutions, I have created a Sankalpa for myself in recent years, but this year for the first time, I have chosen a word that represents the year’s theme. The power to be something that, at this moment, I don’t feel like I am. Are you ready to choose your 2023 theme? In this article, I go through what a theme for 2023 means in more detail. And how you choose yours. At the end of the article, I will also reveal my own theme for 2023.
New Year’s resolutions don’t work, at least not permanently. You fail to keep your promises and then feel worse than when you started or made the promise. New Year’s resolutions are often limiting, and luckily there are other ways to progress toward your goals. For example, you can choose a word for yourself that will be your theme for the new year. Choosing a theme is like creating a Sankalpa, a way to achieve goals.
You have all the power to be whatever you want. The only thing you have to do is to decide what you want to be(come) in 2023. Or how you want your life to be this year. When choosing a theme for the year, think about the direction you want to go. Think about your future, what your life looks like now, and what needs to change. Then choose a word for yourself, and prepare for change.
Choosing a word guides you toward the future version of yourself. When decision-making is based on what you want your future to look like, it’s much easier to create habits that support the life you want.
We all want to be the best versions of ourselves – emotionally, physically, and spiritually. We desire to progress in life and well-being, which often seems easier said than done. Indeed all of us have tried to set goals and made New Year’s resolutions, only to abandon them before February is even over.
The word you choose for the new year is your “Power to be” or “Power to become” mantra. If you want to be more present, your mantra can be “The power to be present” or “The power to become more present.” Suppose energy is something you want to gain in your life. In that case, the mantra can be “The power to be energetic” or “The power to become more energetic.” If you want to be more kind to yourself this year instead of lashing out, you can focus on being enough; “The power to be enough.”
Each of us recognizes our own “weaknesses.” If you feel that your life is in chaos, balance (Power to be/become balanced) may be something you want actively move towards this year. In this case, you have to recognize the moments in your everyday life that lead to imbalance and think about how you will act in situations that lead to an imbalanced state in the future. Or how do you fix the problem when you’ve already slipped into imbalance? What are the things that keep you balanced? What do you consciously do to maintain or achieve balance in your everyday life?
When the word and, with it, the theme is clear to you; you can choose three areas of life to implement the theme. Record your progress along the way. You can also reward yourself at certain milestones. Create patterns and means by which your future self will always be closer and closer to your current self.
In my case, choosing a word was easy. The last couple of years have been mentally challenging, not to mention financially, so my theme for the new year is “The power to be abundant,” it’s time to leave behind the scarcity mentality, which I’ve drifted into a bit unintentionally during this time. However, it is good to remember that the fact that the situations in our lives are often temporary, and it doesn’t mean that it has to be “my fate.” I can decide what kind of future I create and what I allow myself. I have the power to be abundant.
