Elevate Your Yoga Practice: Essential Oils for Increased Focus and Relaxation

By Hanne

Yoga is a holistic practice that unites the mind, body, and spirit. While the physical postures and breathing techniques are foundational, incorporating essential oils can elevate your experience, helping you achieve greater focus and relaxation. In this article, we explore how essential oils can enhance your yoga practice and provide tips on using them effectively.

Elevate Your Yoga Practice: Essential Oils for Increased Focus and Relaxation

Essential oils have been used for centuries for their therapeutic properties. When used in conjunction with yoga, they can create a more profound and immersive experience. Here are a few benefits of incorporating essential oils into your yoga routine:

Increased Focus: Certain essential oils, like peppermint and rosemary, are known for their ability to enhance concentration and mental clarity.

Deepened Relaxation: Oils such as lavender and chamomile promote relaxation and help release tension, making it easier to achieve a meditative state.

Enhanced Mood: Citrus oils like lemon and wild orange can uplift your mood and create a positive atmosphere during your practice.

Grounding Effects: Oils like sandalwood and balance (doTERRA) can help ground your energy, fostering a sense of stability and calm.

Essential Oils for Focus

1. Peppermint
Peppermint oil is invigorating and refreshing, making it perfect for boosting mental clarity and focus. Its sharp, clean scent can help you stay alert and present during your practice.

How to Use:
Diffuse a few drops in your yoga space or apply a diluted amount to your temples and wrists before starting your practice.

2. Rosemary
Rosemary is known for its cognitive benefits. It can enhance memory and concentration, helping you stay mindful of your movements and breath.

How to Use:
Add a few drops to a diffuser or create a focus-enhancing spray by mixing it with water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist your yoga mat before beginning.

Essential Oils for Relaxation

1. Lavender
Lavender is renowned for its calming properties. It helps reduce anxiety and stress, making it easier to relax and let go during your yoga session.

How to Use: Diffuse lavender oil in your yoga space, or add a few drops to a carrier oil and massage it onto your neck and shoulders.

2. Chamomile
Chamomile oil is soothing and can help you unwind, making it ideal for winding down after a vigorous practice or during a gentle yin yoga session.

How to Use: Mix chamomile with a carrier oil and apply it to your pulse points, or add a few drops to a warm bath as part of your post-yoga relaxation routine.

3. Balance

Balance is doTERRA’s grounding oil blend that brings inner peace. Its earthy scent includes Frankincense and Blue tansy, which help balance the mind and body.

How to use: In yoga practice, Balance can be applied to pulse points such as the wrists and neck before starting. You can also massage a few drops into the soles of your feet to enhance the feeling of grounding and bring more stability and focus to your practice.

Tips for Using Essential Oils in Your Yoga Practice

Diffusion: Using an essential oil diffuser is one of the easiest ways to incorporate oils into your practice. Choose your oil based on your needs for the session—energizing oils for morning practice and relaxing ones for evening sessions.

Topical Application: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying them to your skin. Apply to pulse points like wrists, temples, and behind the ears.

Yoga Mat Spray: Create a yoga mat spray by mixing your favorite essential oils.  This is my favorite mixture: 3/4 dl water, 0,5 dl vinegar or alcohol-free witch hazel, 5 drops of peppermint oil and 3 drops of lavendar oil. Spray your mat lightly before practice to enjoy the benefits of the oils as you move through your poses.

Inhalation: Simply inhale the aroma of the oil directly from the bottle or from a drop or two onto your palm, rub your hands together, and inhale the aroma from your hands for a quick focus or relaxation boost.
