Choosing self-made
natural well-being - But why?

By Hanne

Over a year ago, I talked in the blog about how and why I ended up choosing an organic lifestyle. During the past year, the lifestyle has taken another leap forward, and I have made many cosmetic products myself, among other things. You can reduce your chemical load by preferring organic foods and cosmetics; better yet, choosing self-made natural well-being. And believe me, it is easier than you think, as you will learn later in this article.

But why?

A natural or actually organic lifestyle and choices have been a part of my life for almost ten years. It all started with a course of antibiotics that didn’t suit me, with which I began to think about my whole life differently.

The change started with a change in diet and making it as organic as possible. After this, it was time to go through the cosmetics and home cleaning supplies. You can read the whole change story here.

This year, I have created my own well-being on a larger scale by creating my cosmetic products myself. I can’t precisely define why this happened right now. Still, one influential factor behind it has been the tiredness of extra plastic packaging, in which even organic cosmetic products are often packed.

Advantages of Natural and Organic cosmetics

It’s clear that everything you eat affects your health. Everything you put on your skin also affects your health and well-being. The skin is our largest organ and its job is to protect our body, and because of that, what we put on our skin matters.

In general, when talking about ordinary cosmetics, it is products mainly consisting of artificial, synthetic raw materials. When talking about natural cosmetics, all their raw materials must be found in nature, but natural cosmetics products can also contain artificially produced substances. Organic cosmetics have more organic ingredients than natural cosmetics.

Natural cosmetics are a good choice, as they do not contain synthetic perfumes, synthetic colors or preservatives, silicones, genetically modified ingredients, or UV filters familiar in sunscreens.

When discussing deodorants, for which I will soon give you a DIY version, we obviously need to mention aluminum. Even though it is claimed that aluminum has no connection with breast cancer, I am skeptical that aluminum applied to the armpits every day would be safe.

Why choose Natural or Organic cosmetics?

Perfumes, synthetic fragrances, pesticides, additives, household cleaners, hormonal drugs, plastics, and cosmetic products contain xenoestrogen.

Xenoestrogens are estrogen-like substances that behave like estrogen in the body. They affect the natural hormonal balance and are therefore called hormone disruptors. Xenoestrogens can also affect insulin sensitivity and the function of hormones that regulate satiety. All this alone is a good reason to think about your chemical load and reduce it.

DIY deodorant

The most difficult organic choices have been finding a suitable deodorant. Every product I’ve tried has failed, but I have somehow accepted that this is the case.

At the beginning of the year, when I got tired of the amount of waste, I had the insight to test how a homemade deodorant would work for me. I currently use the following DIY deodorant:

60 ml (0.6 dl) Witch hazel
60 ml (0.6 dl) apple cider vinegar
10 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops of Lavender essential oil

If you want, you could also add 5-7 drops of Peppermint essential oil, and I didn’t want to add Peppermint because of its cooling effects.

You would also need a 120 ml spray bottle for the deodorant. Add witch hazel and essential oils to the bottle and mix. Add apple cider vinegar and mix well. And there you are, it is ready. Remember to shake the bottle well before each use. The deodorant can be stored in the bathroom cabinet.

As summer turns to autumn, I plan to replace Eucalyptus oil with lemon. Citrus oils are phototoxic, i.e., sensitive to light and can burn the skin in sunlight. And even though the armpits are not automatically exposed to sunlight, I have played it safe and avoided using lemon oil during the summer, at least in this way.

About the ingredients

Apple cider vinegar balances the skin’s pH and bacterial strain. It contains: AHA acids, citric and malic acid, amino acids, oligosaccharides, monosaccharides, vitamin C, and potassium.

There is magic in witch hazel. It has pore refining properties. Witch hazel is also ideal for soothing the skin after hair removal and is suitable for sensitive skin.

Eucalyptus oil is not only a fresh scent but also a revitalizing oil. Lavender essential oil is a must-have oil, among other things, because of its versatile uses. Its calming and relaxing scent promotes a peaceful environment. Lavender oil also soothes skin irritations. It can also be mixed with a carrier oil and spread on the soles of the feet before bedtime for better sleep.

A good reason for Choosing self-made natural well-being

This article exemplifies how choosing self-made natural well-being can be really easy. And by making certain products yourself, you can reduce your chemical load. Or at least know more precisely what the cosmetic products that you use contain.

For a long time, I had assumed that things would be somehow laborious or take a lot of time if done by myself. When I started doing things myself, I was amazed at how effortless everything can be, whether it was baking gluten-free rolls or homemade deodorant. I just have to take action.

Are you going to try the deodorant I share in this post?

PS. When discussing essential oils, I prefer dōTERRA products because they are pure.
